History

The Department of Science Education, built on the solid foundation and longstanding tradition of National Taipei University of Education (NTUE), has been progressing steadily and keeping pace with the times. During the period of Normal College, our university was designated as a "Science Education Demonstration School" by the educational authorities. In 1987, the various Normal Colleges were restructured into universities, and the university and our department played significant roles in the planning of science courses, pushing the development of science teacher education in our country to new heights. The Department of Science Education originated from the establishment of the Mathematics and Science Education Department in 1987, during which considerable group teaching was conducted. Starting in 1996, the department officially divided the admissions into Groups A and B in the university entrance examination brochure, with Group B students majoring in natural science education. In 1998, as part of the university's development plan, the department was reorganized as an independent unit, and thus the Department of Science Education was established. The department admits high school graduates and awards them a Bachelor of Science degree upon graduation.

In 1998, the university was approved by the Ministry of Education to offer talent cultivation at the master's level in the field of science education. At that time, the "Natural Group" was established within the Institute of Mathematics and Science Education. From 2004, with the ministry's approval, it was renamed the Institute of Science Education and operated in conjunction with the Department of Science Education, until 2005 when the university was restructured into an education university, and the department and institute were formally integrated, becoming the Master's Program in Science Education. Since 1998 to the present, both the master's program and its predecessor have also offered in-service master's programs, contributing significantly to enhancing the research and teaching capabilities of science educators and improving the level of science education in contemporary national education.

Subsequently, building on the foundation of long-term dedication to science education teaching and academia, the department proposed the establishment of a doctoral program, which was approved and set up in 2007. After the establishment of the doctoral program, the department actively sought collaboration with other universities at home and abroad that have related doctoral programs to learn from their experiences and expand exchanges. At present, the department still maintains its excellent interdisciplinary integration in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, and earth sciences. It is also the only department in the country that has a complete series of programs from undergraduate to master's and doctoral levels. This valuable systemic structure enables full exchange and cooperation among the subject disciplines and allows students from different programs to share and collaborate. It holds functional significance for the future development of the department, the cultivation of outstanding scientists with integrated scientific perspectives, and the training of science educators. Additionally, it has an indicative meaning for our country's international basic science education.
